At the Yoga Center of Houston,
students receive instruction in the Vinyasakrama System of (traditional) Shastriya
Yoga. The genealogy of this method of Yoga spans 12
centuries... resulting in a dynamic, sustainable Yoga practice, suitable for
everyone, at each stage of life. |
The Vinyasakrama approach to Yogasana practice is unique in all of Yoga. Each main Asana (posture) has many elaborate Vinyasas (variations) and each variation is linked to the next by a series of specific transitional movements harnessed to the breath. The cohesive, fluid nature of the Vinyasa practice clearly illustrates why Yoga has, for thousands of years, been included as one of the sixty-four arts of India. The serious student is obliged to memorize the order in which the various Vinyasas can be strung together, and the specific type of breathing that must accompany each movement.

In addition to the Yogasana practice, great emphasis is placed upon the Astangayoga expounded in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. One’s practice should be well rounded with all of the facets intact. Svadhyaya, Vedic recitation, chanting and translation of Yoga’s ancient texts, under the watchful eyes and sharp ears of the Teacher, allows the student an opportunity to examine the philosophical and practical basis of Yoga and make inquiries which remove doubt. This ancient method of study satisfies a need not addressed by the physical practices alone.
Finally, the Vinyasakrama approaches illness and injury with a daunting array of therapeutic applications. The staggering number of Vinyasas (Asana variations), and Swasa Vinyasas (Pranayama variations) enable an experienced teacher to successfully treat any number of conditions.
